{"id":538,"date":"2010-12-01T08:48:49","date_gmt":"2010-12-01T14:48:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/opengecko.com\/computers-2\/experiments-in-online-drawings\/"},"modified":"2010-12-01T08:48:49","modified_gmt":"2010-12-01T14:48:49","slug":"experiments-in-online-drawings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/opengecko.com\/geckoview\/computers-2\/experiments-in-online-drawings\/","title":{"rendered":"Experiments in Online Drawings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font size=\"4\">As a teacher of Economics encouraging use of collaborative tools such as Google Docs, I am keen to find a good solution for students to (co-)create drawings they can quickly access, share and publish online.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"4\">Google docs now of course has a drawing app as part of its suite of online software. This is, as far as I can tell so far, very good. I have still yet to use it with students. One of its main advantages has to be the ability to add the same sharing controls as you can on other Google Docs. I will give it a go soon.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"4\">Recently, I experimented with an alternative. <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dabbleboard.com\" target=\"_blank\"><font size=\"4\">Dabbleboard<\/font><\/a><font size=\"4\"> which in some ways still feels like the beta software it is. However it carries some advantages which I like:<\/font><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><font size=\"4\">Add extra \u2018pages\u2019, effectively making a slide show of drawings (see example below)<\/font> <\/li>\n<li><font size=\"4\">You can save \/ embed \/ download the end results quite easily.<\/font> <\/li>\n<li><font size=\"4\">Intuitively interprets gestures \u2013 a rough line gets picked up and converted in to a neat straight line<\/font> <\/li>\n<li><font size=\"4\">You can click and type text without having to select the text icon<\/font> <\/li>\n<li><font size=\"4\">The controls are generally good (such as quick clone, multiple selection for grouping)<\/font> <\/li>\n<li><font size=\"4\">Integrates with a tool called tokbox so you could record\/video conversations in response to the drawings (I haven\u2019t used this)<\/font> <\/li>\n<li><font size=\"4\">People can join a drawing without signing up \/ registering \u2013 just share the email link \/ embed the image for others to access<\/font> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><font size=\"4\">Disadvantages:<\/font><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><font size=\"4\">Over-sensitive interpretation of your rough gestures \u2013 drawing a curve all to easily becomes a square, for example<\/font> <\/li>\n<li><font size=\"4\">Less control over editor rights \u2013 when I embedded it for access to the students so that they could take control, any \u2018random\u2019 guest visitor could take control without my knowing who \u2013 lots of fun in class, but a wider worry for who can access and edit (the embed below is locked for editing, but its a shame it is all or nothing approach).<\/font> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><font size=\"4\">Overall a good option for a rough and ready drawing facility that produces good results.
